He has a wife, Melanie (Haas) Shafer and 3 daughters. Skylar Cree, Madison Blue, and Troy Averie. He also was born on the same day as former bandmate the Late Joe C. His nieces and nephews call him Uncle Kracker. He met Kid Rock in 1987, the year before Anna's birth, and Rock asked Kracker to become his DJ. Kracker did not know how to work the turntables, but he soon learned how, and he became a long-term friend and colleague of Rock. When together, Rock calls Uncle Kracker "Krack," and Uncle Kracker regularly refers to Rock as "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em."
