In 2000, Toploader was a popular act in British music, but their popularity declined swiftly as bands such as Coldplay and Muse began to lead the changing 21st century music scene. The band split up in 2003, by which time they were very much out of the public eye. Their name refers to a person making a joint and putting most of the drug near the front end of the spliff, which he will then light.[citation needed]
The band had decent success with both albums hitting the Top 5 in the UK Albums Chart, but poor single sales, especially those from their second album Magic Hotel, led to the band being dropped by their record label.
