The Grateful Dead began their career in Menlo Park, California, playing live shows at Kepler's Books.[11] They began as The Warlocks, a group formed in early 1964 from the remnants of a Palo Alto jug band called Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions.[12] But as another band was already recording under the "Warlocks" name, the band had to change its name.[13][14] The Warlocks were originally managed by Hank Harrison, but Harrison went back to graduate school.
